Poems to the Earth on 23rd April: World Book and Copyright Day

Although we had no lesson on Friday you should remember that on 23 April the Book Day and Copyright Day is celebrated all around the world. This day was chosen by Unesco because this day is the anniversary of the death of three important authors around the world: William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. All of them died on 23 April 1616.
These are some of the poems you have written to celebrate the Earth Day last 22nd April. You can read more and listen to the recordings at the wikispace. You did great job!

Earth Day

My name is Earth

I have got water and land

I have got a big heart too

and I am round.

I have got a big sun

and a big moon too

I run and run

I sing a song

and I created myself

with a "boom".

by Laura del Moral.

Thanks to the Earth

We must be happy

because the sky is

sometimes sunny

and when we become old

we must give thanks

because the Earth gives more

and now we must listen to the Earth

because she is ill

and we can heal it.

by Carmen Mª Cueto.

How green you are

Eventually, no more exams till next term. It's time to reflect on your knowledge. Here are some games for you to learn new words and revise past tenses.

April fool's day

Why is All Fools' Day celebrated on 1st April?

April Fools' Day or All Fools' Day is celebrated in many countries on April 1. People play hoaxes and other practical jokes on friends, family members, relatives and neighbours, or send them on fool's errand to embarrass these people. Traditionally, in some countries, the jokes only last until noon: like UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, someone who plays a trick after noon is called an "April Fool". Elsewhere, such as in Ireland, France, and the USA, the jokes last all day.
The tradition begins in France in 1582 . Before that year, the New Year was celebrated for eight days, beginning on March 25; the celebration culminated on April1. With the reform of the calendar made by Charles IX, the Gregorian calendar was introduced, and New Year´s Day was moved to January 1. However, communication in those days was not good. News travelled by foot and many people did not receive it for several years. Others, refused to accept the new calendar and continued to celebrate the New Year´s on April 1. Overtime, it evolved into a tradition on April 1st, being remembered as chaotic and unpredictable day.
In our country we have a similar celebration on 28th December. Now, you have a second chance to play a joke on someone but please, be good teasers.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

This term we are reading Lewis Carroll's classic children's story, Alice's Adventure's in Wonderland. This was a pen-name. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was the author's real name. Alice's world is a dream she is living herself. Is life a dream? Enjoy your reading and have fun with these games and the video.

Irregular verbs

You are studying irregular verbs to speak and write correctly in the past time. You have learnt a lot after having read Treasure Island but you need practise and ,of course, great interest on your side. Remember that you have to learn those verbs by heart. Here you have a video to watch, read and listen to a list of verbs. This will help you. After that you can practise by speaking and writing those verbs on your own too. Visit the post on our wiki to learn more.

CHILDREN FIGHT FOR A BETTER WORLD

Who says that you cannot play your part to make A BETTER VALUABLE WORLD? For these two weeks in your English lessons you have learnt a lot about the concept of peace and great people who fought for it .Caring about our planet is also a question of peace and good actions.

Children have also a lot to say and do. This is an example of a young fighter in its defence :" You adults, you must change your ways...I am here to fight for my future..."

I know that you all are responsible for the planet and are sensitive people. I have learnt that from your messages of peace and your drawings.

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE

This song by the Beatles was first released on 7th July 1967 and very soon it became a hymn of peace all over the world. Know more about it here.
Watch the video and enjoy the song. You can read the lyrics on this site.

PEACE AND NON-VIOLENCE DAY 30th January

Last week we worked on the topic of peace. Here you are the Knotted Gun at the Grounds of the United Nations in New York. Did you enjoy the game where you had to find the missing words (peacemaking terms) within a dove? I hope so. You have learnt new words to speak and write "peacefully".
What about the symbols and messages of peace in each group? Did you get an original one that can be easily associated with PEACE? Next tuesday, we will see. Remember that we have to keep them safe as a treasure in our "sea chest". You are pirates of peace now!!
In the meantime, I would like you to know more about the culture of peace as defined by UNESCO. "Peace can be at hand ;it is in our hands" Koïchiro Matsuura

After that, click on the wiki site to watch, read, listen to and work on the topic of peace.

Treasure Island

Soy Carmen, sí la profe de inglés aunque ahora escriba en nuestra lengua nativa por un momento. Sólo quiero presentaros este enlace para que sepáis algo más sobre los orígenes de la piratería y su dimensión literaria. En la literatura española hay muchos ejemplos donde los bucaneros o filibusteros eran protagonistas, José de Espronceda hizo famoso un cantar que todo/as hemos oído alguna vez: La Canción del pirata.

" Que es mi barco mi tesoro,
que es mi Dios la libertad;
mi ley la fuerza y el viento,
mi única patria la mar".
Now you are reading the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, Treasure Island . I hope you enjoy learning new words related to the pirate world here. Also you could make this quiz to check how much you know about the life of pirates, how they behaved and where they mainly sailed.
Then, you can go on practising vocabulary by listening to a song while reading the lyrics. Try the puzzle first and then sing along.
If you have finished, go to the readers site in our wikispace. Have fun with the video and listen to the story of a hidden treasure .
